Hugh McIsaac, a retired director of Family Court Services in Los Angeles and Portland, Ore., advises divorce attorneys to represent their clients’ long-term interests, not their short-term anger. The average cost of a mediated divorce is less than $7,000 and of a collaborative divorce less than $20,000. This compares with nearly $27,000 for a divorce negotiated by rival lawyers and about $78,000 for a fully litigated divorce.

The adversarial process seems to be the most prevalent method of divorce, despite many peaceful or “less-adversarial” processes that are available, but not widely understood. For good reason, lawyers certainly make more money on the adversarial process and that seems to be what divorce is all about nowadays, who has the best lawyer.

He describes himself as a Children’s Rights attorney and that parents don’t have rights in the common sense, but rather the exclusive authority to exercise parental authority over the children and likewise that children have the exclusive right to receive that authority from their parents.

Certainly having a unique outlook on the rights and responsibilities of both parents and children, he stated that attorneys that are just fighting for their client’s rights and not the children’s rights “makes his job easier.”

Me personally, I believe that our children derive all of their rights through their parents, but Dean Schreyer and I are closer on our perspectives than it appears. Harry Crouch, President of the National Coalition for Men, also stated to me that “Dean is one of the good guys.” I have to say that I agree and Attorney Dean is welcome back to the show anytime, in fact you can bet on it. Why? Because we have a theory that we are going to work out on the true nature of a contractual relationship between consenting adults that arises from the creation of our children! You definitely won’t want to miss that one!
