Without mobilizing grassroots activists to stand and resist local and state government acceptance of federal government bribes, the various layers of government will continue to cannibalize our once great nation’s ability to produce quality goods ~ further driving unemployment and government reliance for survival through the roof.

He stated that Representatives intending to vote one way chicken out because constituents were in the room of certain committee hearings. Start local and show up, even if you aren’t going to say anything.

Monika is providing support for professionals and parents that are dealing with parental alienation, a social dynamic that generally occurs due to divorce or separation. When a child expresses unjustified hatred or unreasonably strong dislike of one parent, making access by the rejected parent difficult or impossible. These feelings may be influenced by negative comments by the other parent and by the characteristics, such as lack of empathy and warmth, of the rejected parent.

It is important to note that the term should not be applied in cases of actual child abuse, when the child rejects the abusing parent to protect themselves.

Monika is a facilitator for the program, Children in the Middle, which has earned the Model Program rating from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). While post divorce education is beneficial, it cannot change the hearts and minds of individuals that participate in alienation. From Parental Alienation Support: Regarding the terms PAS/PAD.

Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS), or known by some as Parental Alienation Disorder, ” is a disorder that arises primarily in the context of child-custody disputes. Its primary manifestation is the child’s campaign of denigration against a parent, a campaign that has no justification. It results from the combination of a programming (brainwashing) parent’s indoctrinations and the child’s own contributions to the vilification of the target parent.”(Gardner, 1998).

How to Recognize PAS? Eight Manifestations:
1. A campaign of denigration
2. Weak, absurd, or frivolous rationalizations for the deprecation
3. Lack of ambivalence
4. The independent thinker phenomenon
5. Reflexive support of the alienating parent in the parental conflict
6. Absence of guilt over cruelty to and /or exploitation of the alienated parent
7. The presence of borrowed scenarios
8. Spread of animosity to friends and /or extended family of the alienated parent

[Editor Note: It is important to note that at the time of this publication, Parental Alienation Syndrome or Parental Alienation Disorder are not included in the current edition of the DSM (DSM IV-TR) and there is a current push to include the manifestation of disorder/syndrome in the next edition. Hugh McIsaac, a retired director of Family Court Services in Los Angeles and Portland, Ore., advises divorce attorneys to represent their clients’ long-term interests, not their short-term anger. The average cost of a mediated divorce is less than $7,000 and of a collaborative divorce less than $20,000. This compares with nearly $27,000 for a divorce negotiated by rival lawyers and about $78,000 for a fully litigated divorce.

The adversarial process seems to be the most prevalent method of divorce, despite many peaceful or “less-adversarial” processes that are available, but not widely understood. For good reason, lawyers certainly make more money on the adversarial process and that seems to be what divorce is all about nowadays, who has the best lawyer.

Just what exactly does S.M.A.R.T. stand for? It is real simple how it has been laid out. State your goals and objectives at the beginning. Make sure these are realistic. Maximize your information and knowledge base. Avoid reacting to your emotions. Retain the best possible divorce team your budget allows. Treat your divorce as a business transaction.

Not everyone will agree with every aspect of any program, but a key point that I saw was know your objectives at the forefront. Popular culture has raised us to believe that we have to hire the most aggressive attorney possible while trying to dominate the adversarial process against a soon-to-be ex-spouse. Times are finally starting to change with viable alternatives coming forward to help families separate with less conflict and more emphasis on their children. Coloring Away Pain is dedicated to bringing playful resources to children dealing with difficult life situations including divorce and parental alienation. By addressing issues such as bullying, death of a loved one, a deployed parent, or a natural disaster through the use of animal characters and easily digested stories, children often are able to open up and express themselves. The coloring books each encourage a child to explore a subject with the animal characters, answer thought provoking questions, and draw freely in addition to the standard coloring activities. Coloring Away Pain originally began in response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Now, Coloring Away Pain has over 15 titles in publication and has been translated into multiple languages.

Child therapists often use art in therapy because children often have more difficulty than adults trying to put feelings into words. It makes perfect sense for parents to be able to work with their children through various issues that might be beyond their current vocabulary and understanding. Art therapy can be used with children, adolescents and adults who are struggling with personal issues or just in search of personal growth. There are many developmental stages that children go through during their lives from scribbling at ages 2-4 to pseudo realism at ages 11-13, where the child is more critical of themselves and when they began to make decisions on their own. It is not unusual for children to go back and forth between stages according to various sources.

I personally really enjoyed the interview and see this as yet another resource that has been helping children and parents in a variety of situations. In an effort to spread awareness of these resources, we need your help and that means stepping up in your own community. How? Well the first thing is that you need to do go to their website at http://www.coloringawaypain.com and familiarize yourself with the variety of books that are available. After learning more about these resources contact your local community mental health center and ask to speak with someone that works with children and obtain their email address. Send them an email that contains the links showing all of the currently coloring books and introduce yourself briefly. This will help you build a rapport with the local office. Another project to consider is to start a crayon drive in your community, contact a small business to see if they will sponsor some books so that you can take them to child therapists and libraries, contact your local newspaper to see if they will do a story on these available resources as a public interest piece. Coloring Away Pain is a 501(c)(3) federally registered non-profit and contributions/donations made to them may qualify you for a reduction in taxes.

MORE ABOUT THE STAGES ASSOCIATED WITH ART THERAPY AND CHILDREN

Developmental aspects of children’s drawings
In 1947 Victor Lowenfeld published the book Creative and Mental Growth in which he connected intellectual growth, psychosocial stages of development, and six stages of development in children’s drawings. Cross-sectional studies conducted by Kellogg (1970) also support the conclusion that children progress in drawing through different stages that fall into predictable age groups as follows:

Scribble Stage
The scribbling stage appears at about eighteen months to two years of age. According to most researchers, this scribble is not just aimless motion created at random by the child, but demonstrates an awareness of pattern and growing hand-eye coordination. (Silk & Thomas, 1990; Lowenfeld & Brittain, 1987)

Soon after children start scribbling, they will start to name what it was they drew after they have finished drawing it. Around two years of age, children will sometimes label their drawing before they have started working on it, but if the drawing looks like something else to them, they may just change the label. Their scribbles progressively become more recognizable and separate shapes appear on the same page. At around three and a half years, children begin incorporating details like fingers on hands. (Silk & Thomas, 1990; Lowenfeld & Brittain, 1987)

“Pre-Schematic” Stage
The next stage of drawing, identified by Lowenfeld as the “Pre-Schematic” stage, typically occurs between four and seven years. In the emergence of this stage, children may draw a human figure with a circle and two dangling lines for legs. Sometimes they include a rectangular shape for trunks of bodies, and often little marks inside the circle to represent facial features. This tadpole schema is used for animals as well as people. Drawings at this level are often described as symbolic realism because a child is perfectly happy with a simple symbol of an object. (Silk & Thomas, 1990; Lowenfeld & Brittain, 1987)

“Schematic” Stage
The “Schematic” stage of drawing generally occurs at ages 7-9. Some characteristics that commonly occur in this stage are indicative of what the child is thinking versus what is actually seen by the child. An interesting phenomenon that occurs in many children’s drawings during this stage is called “x-ray drawing”. In these, a child will draw things that aren’t really visible in life. A good example of this is a man on a horse with both legs showing, even though we would really only see one. Pregnant women are often shown with a visible baby in their abdomens. Details like hands, fingers, and clothing are added with greater and greater frequency. (Silk & Thomas, 1990) As they progress further, overlapped objects, such as a tree partially obscured by the edge of a house, also emerge. The farther away something is, the smaller it will be portrayed, regardless of the real relationship in size between the objects. This indicates a growing comprehension of perspective. In many cases, children have begun using one-point perspective. (Silk & Thomas, 1990; Lowenfeld & Brittain, 1987)

“Dawning Realism” Stage
Around the age of nine or ten, children’s drawings become increasingly standardized. An emphasis on depicting how things really look can begin to frustrate them. This is referred to as the “Gang Age” or “Dawning Realism.” Children will often bring comic strip figures or commercial logos into their drawings and it is at this point that many children lose interest in drawing, as they become dissatisfied with their results. Adults often draw at this level or slightly below because this is where they ended their art education.

Kristine Cassady is many things to many people; devoted wife, homeschool teacher, chef, nurse, and nurturer to her five children, along with being a friend, and daughter.  However, new roles have crept into her busy life, ones that have taken her quite by surprise, the roles of activist for her children’s freedoms and crusader of responsible government.  Like many, Kristine was dismayed to read the news and see her children’s hopes for future prosperity be replaced with debt and taxation.  Not one to sit around and complain, she looked for ways to make a difference. This led to her involvement with helping organize the Indianapolis Tax Day Tea Party, and subsequently, becoming involved with the Independence Caucus (whose mission is to replace 40% of the compromised incumbents in the 2010 elections, and has the proven track-record to achieve this goal).

During the Tea Party planning, it became evident to Kristine that a rally would need to be followed by concrete action, and this action would have to focus upon getting real representation back into our compromised government.  She started working closely with the Independence Caucus on any project they needed help with and was asked to be one of ten regional representatives to help organize the Independence Caucus throughout the 50 states, her region encompasses Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.  She is now devoted tirelessly to the cause of spreading the successful campaign strategies implemented by the founders of Independence Caucus when working with Rep. Americans for Prosperity Michigan Chapter Advisory Board Member Jack Hoogendyk and AFP-Michigan State Director Scott Hagerstrom joined the Get Your Justice Live program Wednesday June 17, 2009 and they brought a multitude of fresh issues to the national audience. Americans for Prosperity (AFP) and Americans for Prosperity Foundation (AFP Foundation) are committed to educating citizens about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process.

Just some of the discussions included right to work legislation, parental rights issues, establishing a limited government, enforcing government transparency (see-through spending), cap and trade policies, center right meetings, and the notion of taxation by citation/government funding.  The consensus seems to be that moving citizens into stronger and better informed advocacy positions will certainly advance a more predictable and transparent government, and our Americans for Prosperity guests certainly enumerated that vision.

Having both of these grassroots enablers on the line at the same time, we were able to discuss the top three federal and state changes needed to roll back government and place citizens back in control of their own destinies. Take a simple hour of your time and arm yourself with critical information to help not only the State of Michigan, but the entire Nation. Bringing jobs, reducing our government bureaucracy, emphasize core principles, and remind our government that the Constitution is a restriction on them not the citizens.

Americans for Prosperity Foundation is committed to educating citizens about economic policy and a return of the federal government to its Constitutional limits. AFP Foundation’s educational programs and analyses help policymakers, the media and individual citizens understand why policies that promote the American enterprise system are the best method to ensuring prosperity for all Americans. Nancy Schaefer is president of Eagle Forum of Georgia. She served in the Georgia State Senate for four years. She has been a staunch defender of parents’ rights and will also assume the position of Eagle Forum’s National Chairman of Parents’ Rights. She is president of Family Concerns, Inc. and represented Eagle Forum at the Untied Nations conferences in Beijing, Istanbul, Rome and New York. Nancy Schaefer is well-known for a scathing report titled “The Corrupt Business of Child Protective Services” that was originally released on November 16, 2007 and later updated on September 25, 2008. State Senator Pam Roach continues to serve in the Washington State Senate for 19 years. In the year 2000, Senator Roach and her son Representative Dan Roach became the first mother/son duo to represent the same district at the same time. Throughout her years of service she has represented the U.S. in East Timor for the International Republican Institute; hosted a radio talk show on KIRO in Seattle; and is founder of an NGO in Honduras among other accomplishments. As Judiciary chair she authored landmark bills on juvenile justice and DUI. Senator Roach chaired the Children and Family Services Committee and continues to advocate for children and parental rights. This year Senator Roach chaired a special legislative committee to shine light on the lack of accountability and trampling of parental rights by the Child Protective Services. She continues to demand accountability within Child Protective Services today.
